javier grillo-marxuach here, live from middleman HQ...

...friends, there's been a lot of loose talk - a lot of words bandied about, words like "cancellation."

which means, i gotta answer the question: has "the middleman" been cancelled?

here's the scoop: we are a fantastically well-reviewed series that the network loves and supports. abc family is the one place that allowed us to do this show in all of its quirky glory, and in spite of the ratings, they continue to tell me "don't change a thing."

and about those ratings? well...while improving incrementally, they have not been stellar, so we - and by "we," i mean the network and myself - have made the decision to make and air a twelve episode first season of "the middleman."

it is a decision that allows us to conclude our first season on a great creative note, and to pool our resources to make our season finale the best and biggest it can be.

in short: we are doing everything we can to delive "the middleman" to whatever the future holds for us: and a crucial part of that future hinges on your continued support.

so, the bottom line - the middleman ain't dead.

if you like the show, then keep watching, the best is yet to come.

if you like the show enough to tell your friends, even better.*

and, of course, we will be at the san diego comicon (me, matt keeslar and les mcclaine on thursday, and me and natalie morales at the tv guide panel on saturday at 6), to meet you - the fans - to drum up support for the show, to sign autographs and give away scwhag...why? because we can't do this without you!

and as we say here at middleman HQ: "pugnantes malos, ne hos pugnetis!"

*if your friend has a nielsen box, that would be the best!

Oh, if only I still had a Nielsen box. < mourns > Still, I'm out there pimping away (6 people who blame me and counting!), and delighted that ABC Family is backing you so strongly, because you rock! Yay!

Have fun at ComicCon! < she pouts, since she's going to WorldCon instead >

*fangirls the entire production staff, cast, and network*

Doing my best to pimp the show like a crack addicted runaway at all times. Will keep soldiering on. And hope you have a fantastic SDCC, and an early s2 pickup, and fame, fortune, and an unending supply of red vines, Dr Pepper, and slyders.

ETA: that said, is there a mailing address we who adore the fruit of your mental loins can send postcards saying "We love The Middleman. Please keep the crack coming" at ABC Family?

I've been watching and enjoying it on ABC family. Query: is there a benefit, renewal-wise, to ALSO downloading it from iTunes (since I don't have a Nielson Box myself)?

I'm glad they're telling you not to change a thing. That's a good sign, I hope!

I do speak of it often, and fondly to friends, but whether that has turned into more viewers, no idea yet.

But I do intend to see you at comic con, as usual.

Hey Javi :) I'm greatly enjoying the show! It's very quirky, as you say, it's got a lot of smart dialogue that I love. Not to mention, the middleman is pretttty ;) So keep doing what you're doing and I'll keep watching!

Does watching on ABC's website help ratings? I was never sure about that. I assume that in this day and age, the answer is no, but only for a little while longer.

P.S. No smiling MK at Comic-con this year. Although I did have a dream last night that my bf and my friends somehow managed to get me back to L.A. and then to San Diego, and to get me in to the sold out con.

That was an awesome dream.

None of my friends have Nielsen boxes. :(

Here at Disney World, they made a lot of announcements recently about things closing, including Pleasure Island, an area of dance clubs and comedy clubs. One of those clubs, The Adventurer's Club, is a one of a kind location chock full of improv where characters interact with guests in a circa 1940s environment. Fans have launched a Save The Adventurers Club campaign by sending Bob Iger maps (because they are adventurers, and well, they figure Bob has never been there, so he needs directions).

Can you let us know when we need to start sending Bob Iger and/or Paul Lee stacks of Middleman comic books. (I figure they need to know The Middleman, and then the revenue from comic books would help out too!)

YAY!! Can't wait to meet you at Comic Con!!!

Oh wait... I have met you. Many times in fact. Hmmm...change that to: "Can't wait to SEE YOU AGAIN at Comic Con!!!" :D

I have some prettiful promo cards for the book that I want you to see. Oh - and looking forward to being immersed in MMan goodness while in SD ;)

I wish it was showing in Australia. I downloaded the first ep, though, and it was fantastic. We will buy the dvds for sure!

I watch The Middleman every week without fail! And I record it on my DVR -- does that help? I have told all my friends to watch it too.

Wish I was going to Comic Con...big hugs to all of you for such a great show!

I'd been wondering how many episodes they'd ordered. 12's a decent first season for a summer basic cable show. It's how Kyle XY started out on ABC Family too.

Won't be at Comic-Con, but will be in LA the following weekend. I'd offer to take you out to Roscoe's for some chicken 'n waffles, but I'm guessing you guys will be back in production.

Don't know any Nielsen families but I'm sure telling everyone I know to watch the show.

Maybe if Natalie started running around in that outfit from the beginning credits more.... :)

I've been digging the show more and more each week. It doesn't help the ratings but I've also held a "watch the pilot" party to help friends get into the show who missed the first week. I'm betting that with a little time from ABC Family and a reasonable rerun schedule that this could develop into a series with much better numbers.

Sorry for the aside...
...but I'm kinda curious if you were initially inspired for the name of the comic by the MF Doom song, It Ain't Nuttin':
Stop kiddin' middlemen need Ritalin
Hit me with the full tin of gin and I'm a kid again.
I know that each makes me think of the other now :)

It sucks because I don't even have a TV. I have to rely on ABC family's website and iTunes to watch. I am loving the show though.

I just met you at ComicCon and you were just amazing. Charming, funny, gracious to fans, and a big ol' geek yourself. I already loved the show, and was telling my friends, but now I will tell them louder and maybe bribe them with cookies.

Keep up the great work.

My Nielsen box and I are watching!
I don't fall into ABC Family's typical demo AT ALL, but I gave "Middleman" a try and I've been pleasantly surprised at its all-ages appeal. Keeslar does a fantastic job, Morales is cute and snappy, and the scripts continue to pop without overdoing it. Keep up the good work. I'll stop fast-forwarding through the ads from now on!

I'll keep preaching the smacktasticness of the show!

(side note "I" never said it was canceled I just said I heard the same thing about not filming the 13th ep.)

How do the ratings track online viewers?

We don't have cable TV, but I've become a devoted viewer via the streaming video on the abcfamily.com website.

Javi,

I'm enjoying everything about THE MIDDLEMAN, from the quirky writing filled with in-jokes to how enthused all the actors seem to be about their characters.

I'll be there for the show each week and (fingers crossed) the DVDs. More power to you and everyone making THE MIDDLEMAN.

The Wife and I started watching thanks to the iTunes pilot ep. giveaway. Despite what we felt was a weak start we were hooked by the third episode and we grow fonder of it every week.

We polled a bunch of Browncoats (Firefly/Serenity fans) and most of them were already watching (with much love and hugs all around) and those that were are now dutifully notified that you have a fantastic show.

With the trend of SciFi TV going darker with shows like Heroes, BSG, SCC, and even Chuck, it is nice to have a show with a lighter tone that isn't a throwaway.

You guys and Eureka on SciFi are "palate-cleansing" freshness for our Sci-Fi diet. It is nice to laugh and enjoy some of the pointed satire of comicbook and action-adventure staples without resorting to all-out farce.

Bravo! Keep making them, and I know we'll keep watching.

Say it ain't so
I was reading a review of Middleman that said MM was x-files meets Get Smart ( or maybe i saw it on tv). Either way it was false; MM is x-files meets Dr. Who. (Not the new awesome, but still slightly campy Dr. Who that I love ever so much; the 1980's Dr. Who that was so cheesy nerdy kids had to be careful of their lactose intolerances in order to watch; real Wisconsin cheddar) That's what I love about MM. It is a rarity these days to see a show that doesn't put on airs, pretending like it isn't concerned with emmy's and whatnot. With MM, which I didn't even know was on the air because of my nearly 2 year lapse in reading your blog (please forgive; it won't happen again). I was at the movies and saw a commercial, went home and tivo'ed episode 5. It was great! My 14 year old daughter, who is the only one in the family that knows what T.A.R.D.I.S. means besides me, watches faithfully with me each week. So now it looks like the MM is in danger!
Besides mailing M&M's, is there a way we can save MM from a fate similar to Firefly? Tell us what more we can do.

I care
Man I loved this show, so many memories. If anyone else still trawls through these old boards we should start up some new comments, show people we still care!
